Version 2.1.9 is very ancient (1998). The latest testing version is
2.1.50, available from http://www.octave.org/download.html

You will probably need to use a more recent compiler though (gcc 3.3)

However, if you have Debian, you can simply install a precompiled binary
(together with the octave-forge extensions) with the command

apt-get install -t testing octave2.1 octave-forge
